ABSTRACT

In Taiwan, the certification system for sport psychology consultants (SPCs) has been established since 2008. This chapter describes the experience of providing sport psychology services to an elite boxer, highlight our working approach, and discuss several reflections on our services. The sport psychology services provided by the SPC included psychological skills education and training, team management, individual consultations, small group consultations, and competition observations. The opportunity to provide sport psychology consultation for a boxing team was largely credited to the persistent requests of a high-school coach. This coach holds a doctorate degree in sports science, is a licensed fitness trainer, and formerly coached the national women's boxing team in Taiwan. The coach also aspired to develop a training model that could foster Olympic-level athletes, which is unprecedented in Taiwan. As sport psychology consultation services do not include long-term monitoring, psychological assessments have to be re-administered to reflect extant conditions of athletes.
