Urban geopolitics is also in the core of this chapter. Focusing on the violent clashes that engulfed the country and its capital in May 2008, Sara Fregonese argues that within days Beirut’s urban space and built environment were redrawn: roads barricaded, areas divided, and buildings deliberately targeted. Throughout this chapter, she analyses and conceptualises the formation and resurgence of urban borders during and in the aftermath of the violence. Theoretically, the chapter also suggests an understanding of the notions of a sense of territoriality and of the obduracy of urban frontiers, which are built on and developed in this chapter to highlight the importance of everyday aspects surrounding the resurgence and formation of old and new urban borders in situations of conflict.
