ABSTRACT

Can anyone become a teacher? Perhaps, however multiple variables appear to demonstrate that developing a successful teaching career is a complex lifelong process combining hard work, devotion, and both professional and personal skills (Kelly, 2009; Miksza & Berg, 2013; Raiber & Teachout, 2014). Furthermore, a music teacher’s success is dependent upon the interaction of many factors including musical, emotional, intellectual, and physical components. Additionally, a strong social awareness appears necessary. For example, while technical and musical competences enable individuals to select and perform music, social components such as voice fluctuations, teacher energy and enthusiasm, proximity to students, eye contact, verbal and non-verbal communications contribute to connecting subject matter to student interest and motivation. Consequently, effective music teachers not only know the content of their subject matter, they are also able to socially present information (Madsen, 2003).
