ABSTRACT

Culture cannot be dissociated from agriculture, in rural areas, despite the threat of a gradual process of industrialization, traditional farming systems still resist in many rural areas. The conservation of the tacit knowledge associated with these systems is essential to ensure long-term cultural sustainability. This chapter aims to explore the cultural aspects of traditional farming systems to better understand its adaptation to particular environments. This exploration of culturally diverse practices is fundamental in the maintenance of bio-cultural diversity and on the identification of interest. The traditional knowledge existing about specific agro-eco-systems is an important aspect to better achieve local sustainable development, being a question of food sovereignty in extreme environments.
