ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a critical appraisal of the Peacebuilding Architecture's (PBA's) engagement with Liberia, and examines the institutionalized peacebuilding process and program. It also examines the PBA's approach in three priority areas: rule of law, security sector reform (SSR), and national reconciliation. The chapter examines reconciliation efforts supported by the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), before discussing the PBA's overall contribution to and impact on the consolidation of peace in Liberia to date. The United Nations(UN) Peacebuilding Architecture, consisting of the PBC, Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO), and Peacebuilding Fund (PBF), was launched with the creation of the PBC as an intergovernmental advisory body following the UN World Summit in 2005. A Country-Specific Configuration (CSC) was created for Liberia, under the chairmanship of Prince Zeid al Hussein, permanent representative of Jordan to the UN. During the first three years of PBF support, the hub initiative focused primarily on establishing the first regional hub in Gbarnga, Bong County, with responsibility for Bong, Lofa, and Nimba counties.
