ABSTRACT

This chapter evaluates the Peacebuilding Architecture's (PBA's) engagement in Sierra Leone, through the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) and the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF), and reviews some of its key achievements in consolidating peace in the country. Progress has been made in New York for a renewed engagement of the PBC in Sierra Leone as the country prepares to 'graduate' from the commission and focus more on long-term development challenges than on core peacebuilding priorities. The PBC included Sierra Leone on its agenda in July 2006, following a request from the United Nations(UN) Security Council for advice on the situation of the country. The PBF has been an important source of rapid and flexible funding for peacebuilding initiatives in Sierra Leone. One project received PBF funds in the area of economic revitalization, which supported the Youth Secretariat in carrying out its activities and reflected the PBC concern with the issue of youth unemployment.
