ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on principally on interviewing for print and online publications there is still a lot that newspaper, magazine and online journalists can learn from the best TV and radio interviewers – everything from building up trust. Formulating concise, open-ended questions to maintaining good eye contact, listening hard to an interviewee's answers and not letting a reply hang in the air with a glaringly obvious follow-up question left unasked. The book sets out to guide us through the basics of interviewing everyone from monosyllabic teenagers to high-profile politicians, many of whom will have a tendency to answer their own questions. It looks at the pros and cons of phones, audio and video recorders as opposed to shorthand. The book includes a selection of their top tips for journalism students and trainees and interviewing tasks to put our journalistic skills into practice.
