ABSTRACT

One-to-one interviews are by no means the only interviews; journalists will be required to do as a journalist. There are a host of other ways to gather material for news stories and features – from vox pops to press conferences – all of which require first-rate interviewing skills. In short, editors use vox pops to provide a snapshot of public opinion. Writing in a 2016 blog post Nicholas Jones said that vox pops can be unrepresentative, especially as they tend to be conducted in the late morning or early afternoon, when many people are at work. Wendy Holden is a natural interviewer and over the years she's interviewed many people who have suffered heartbreak and trauma in their lives. They include three survivors of the 1988 Piper Alpha disaster, one of the world's worst oil-rig accidents, in which 167 workers died off the coast of Aberdeen. Holden makes sure that the people she interviews feel comfortable with the situation.
