ABSTRACT

Knowledge gathering and problem solving are fundamental to how people function, survive, and progress. Humans have organized knowledge in a variety of ways, one main way has been to separate parts of knowledge into different disciplines. STEM skills go beyond just the basic knowledge about the disciplines but as Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) 2012 highlights STEM skills that are embedded with problem-solving have the most yield for creativity and for moving the fields forward. The big issue of sustainability stretches across the globe, beyond geopolitical lines, and beyond economic competition, at the very core the issue, is human survival within the large interwoven systems. Sustainability is the ultimate design brief, and as disciplines are evolving to break free from siloes, design is coming onto the mainstage as a key player in solving big issues in sustainability. Sea Changes is an organization that aligns itself as an example of STEAM.
