ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the unique needs veterans face. It examines mental health issues such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, and homelessness among the veteran population. In addition, a demographic background for the convicted is provided. To understand the dynamics of the incarcerated veteran population, it is important to understand their demographic background and criminal history. Approximately a quarter of veterans in prison and less than a third of those in jail reported they experienced combat while in the military. Individuals with a service-related disability face the same consequences as other individuals with a disability. Veterans returning from war often struggle with PTSD, mental defects related to TB infections, and/or other mental health concerns. The VBO Program is essential for the success of veterans' treatment courts as they work to connect veterans with disability compensation, pension benefits, employment, and training. The chapter concludes with regarding specific programming offered to justice-involved veterans.
