ABSTRACT

This chapter explores and evaluates the programmatic and spatial needs of the Science Museum in London. There is, and has always been, an inevitable requirement for change over time as the museum's position within wider contexts shifts. Planning for this change requires a long-term strategy, or masterplan. The museum masterplan maintains the focus on the visitor experience and provides a framework for decision-making, prioritization for capital investment, and support for fundraising activities. Part of the masterplanning process is to look back at the museum's history, the original architectural brief, and the original architectural spaces for inspiration and guidance. The Science Museum is an eminent institution responsible for an internationally important collection documenting the history of science, technology, and medicine. The Science Museum developed its current masterplan in 2010–2011. The Science Museum works with many different designers and architects to implement the masterplan.
