ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the next subsequent chapter. The part demonstrates the reuse of large infrastructure and multi-building campuses. It focuses on an existing, underutilized infrastructure and its possibilities for reuse and revitalization. The part presents the example of the Otto-Lilienthal TXL Airport in Germany, specifically that of Terminal A, by outlining how it is planned to be reused as a higher education research facility, to exhibit how dated infrastructure can have a second life for new users. It shows adaptive reuse of a Prussian Artillery Barrack complex as it evolved from its original conception to its current use. The part provides the unique example of an urban municipality project in Gartcosh, Scotland. It concludes with an example of building information model used for a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit with specific examples on how it influenced the architects' design, construction, and building commissioning phases of their project.
