ABSTRACT

The Acholi have a proverb: Poyo too perweny – “Death is a scar that never heals.” This has certainly seemed to be the case for the million-plus Acholi after decades of violence in northern Uganda at the hands of Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army. Tens of thousands of Acholi children were abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army rebel group between 1986 and 2006. Tens of thousands more were war-affected, forced to walk each evening to seek safety in town, or to live in difcult conditions in internally displaced persons camps.
