ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the economic implications of trade in healthcare services, particularly medical tourism in Kenya and South Africa. The potential impact of this trade on foreign exchange revenue, employment and related sectors of the economy is evaluated. In addition, opportunities and challenges that these countries face as they continue to carve a niche in the global trade in medical tourism is investigated. From a policy perspective, governments’ partnership with the key stakeholders is essential to ensure that the benefits from trade in healthcare is inclusive in terms of availability, affordability, quality and equity in access.
