ABSTRACT

Census and analysis of the intellectual output of any given knowledge field enables an understanding of its characteristics and an evaluation of its results. Viewed by Certeau1 as the only means of making them accurate, this process of extracting the procedures practised by a science also reveals the processes carried out in the act of extraction itself – that is, the conditions that guide any statements made – and the conditions that then reorganise these statements to form a certain view of the “state of the art”. This point highlights the complexity of attempting to represent the territory of a recently reconfigured field of study (an attempt to which the authors are committed) – a complexity that only increases
