ABSTRACT

The term ideo-motor action has been used to refer to movements that are performed in accordance with movements that are perceived—i.e., to situations where action is (seems to be) immediately guided by perception. In this chapter there is much reference to classic literature on this matter. Yet, it is not meant as a chapter on the history of the perception/action issue, but rather as a systematic examination of ideo-motor phenomena as well as of their proposed theoretical explanations. Recent literature is scarce due to the fact that the field of ideo-motor action that flourished in the beginning of the century, has been abandoned long since.
