ABSTRACT

The media literacy movement in Thailand first started in 1979. The Foundation for Child Development was the first non-profit organization to incorporate national and international knowledge of media literacy and to develop a Thai model of media literacy. The promotion of media literacy increased during 2010 to 2012, as the concept of media literacy began to expand to information and communication technology (ICT). Cross-sector collaboration between government agencies, non-profit organizations, and the education sector occurred in response to the media and technology crisis. Media Literacy Education in Thailand should focus on human development and the psychology of learning to enhance the cognitive, psychological, and spiritual development of the young and to consider Thai social and cultural contexts. Past research on media literacy in Thailand provides a thorough understanding and direction to develop a concept and pedagogy of media literacy education for participatory citizenship in Thai contexts.
