ABSTRACT

Participation among older adults who receive home-based services is influenced by the service systems and the service providers. This chapter compares and discusses the experience of participation in older adults receiving home-based services from the perspectives of home-based service providers and older adults. The findings result from the project 'Participation in older adults – in the context of receiving home-based services', which aimed at developing knowledge of how older adults receiving home-based services act and participate in everyday life, and how service providers work to support their participation. The project was financed by the Norwegian Research Council. Process-oriented participation was experienced by the older adults as value-based, a process reaching beyond having tasks carried out, and generally concerned the maintenance of dignity and pride. The distinction between task-oriented and process-oriented participation was identified as a key finding, representing contrasting perspectives on older adults' participation in service providers and older adults, respectively.
