ABSTRACT

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) integrates the medical and the social perspectives, and the model can therefore be used to combine these two perspectives to give a better understanding of the rehabilitation process. This chapter introduces the story of Daniel to illuminate how the ICF model may serve as a tool for a discussion of collaboration in rehabilitation. The case of Daniel is a clinical example from the first author's experience working as a physiotherapist in a municipality. Three main issues are discussed from this case where participation is the main component: first, the importance of different types of knowledge in the rehabilitation process; second, the challenge from the individual client's point of view to understand the different perspectives among the service levels; and third, the challenge to achieve good collaboration and co-ordination between the service levels.
