ABSTRACT
The purpose of this article is to analyze the Treaties of Commerce and Navigation signed between Britain and Portugal in 1810, and the debates they gave rise to in the nineteenth century. Signed in the context of the Old Regime crisis1 the Treaties represented an important turning point in Brazilian history, having contributed to the rapprochement between Brazilian and British merchants, the independence movement of Portuguese America, and the rise of the Brazilian Empire.
