ABSTRACT
The central theme of this double special issue of The Journal of Peasant Studies is that of state and peasant in Ottoman history. We present it at an exciting time in Ottoman historiography, when the orthodoxy and rigidity of the past are being forcefully challenged, on a wide variety of fronts. Those fronts are identified in Suraiya Faroqhi’s article, ‘In Search of Ottoman History’.
