ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study to obtain an understanding of how the adolescents were adjusting to the experience of living with dyslexia. Qualitative methods breathe life into research, allowing investigators to focus on people and to understand their lived experiences through their unique interpretive lenses. There were two groups of participants in this study: the adolescents with dyslexia and their mothers. From the 17 children between the ages of 10 and 12 in the original study, 13 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 16 and their mothers continued in the current study, which was a four-year-follow-up. One of the most powerful qualitative research methods for studying children is the case study, which holds a time-honored position of respect in the fields of education, medicine and psychology. A collective case study approach, sometimes referred to as a multiple-case design with a cross-case analysis, was implemented to study the lives of these children.
