ABSTRACT

This chapter is based on empirical research into the relationship between religion and business among Chinese Indonesians in Yogyakarta. It discusses the ethnic and economic position and positioning of Chinese Indonesians in Indonesia over the last few decades as well as the upsurge of the charismatic movement in Indonesia since the 1980s. The chapter asks why Pentecostal-charismatic Christianity speaks to the imagination of Chinese Indonesian business owners in particular. The chapter demonstrates that the Pentecostal-charismatic movement and Chinese Indonesian business owners have encountered and engaged each other in a dialectical process of empowerment that has profound implications for both business and ethnic life.
