ABSTRACT
Yü-k’ou Village is located thirty li south of Ch’in hsien in Shansi Province. In this village lives an old shepherd named Liu Erh-mo. A “five-good” commune member, he is sixty-seven years old this year. Starting at age seven, he has already worked as a shepherd for sixty years. People, concerned about him, have advised him to retire, but he is unwilling to do so. Every day he drives his flock of sheep to pasture, and the sounds of the song “The Communist Party Is Our Benefactor” fill the mountain fastness. Every time people hear him sing the song, they say in admiration, “That poor wretch is getting younger and younger.”
