ABSTRACT

The incidents narrated in the following sketch took place prior to the formation of that excellent Society, at the head of which stands, as patroness, Her Majesty the Queen Dowager – we mean the Society for the Relief of Distressed Needlewomen. This philanthropic association must have the good wishes of all humane persons, and the last cannot evince or set forth the sincerity of those wishes better than by aiding the Society’s funds. Much good has been done, and it is to be hoped is still doing, through the medium of the charity in question; and, as a necessary consequence, an increasing treasury will cause the sphere of benevolence, like the ever-widening circles put into motion by a pebble cast into a lake, to be in a constant state of progression and enlargement
