ABSTRACT

Walter L. Arnstein's scholarly interests are numerous and diverse, and his publications continue to be influential. His lectures are clear, organized, energetic, and laced with humor. His standards can be met, but only through diligent effort. His ability to teach writing is remarkable, both through example and through his evaluation of student's papers. All of his graduate and advanced undergraduate students have had the experience of turning in a 'polished' paper, only to have it returned with extensive marginal notations and several pages of single-spaced typed comments raising points missed arguments in need of clarification, and suggestions for rephrasing. One of the most important legacies of Professor Arnstein's tenure at the University of Illinois has been the British History Association, known as the BHA, the founding of which he inspired in 1971 and which until 2000 persisted.
