ABSTRACT

This chapter presents research on tourism gentrification in Latin American cities. It describes the historical context of Cartagena as well as the conservation and restoration of its heritage. The chapter explains the process of gentrification from its initial stage of private investment to the tourism investment in recent years. It focuses on land use changes and the decentralisation of urban functions. The changes in land use and increased tourism activities and services have also affected the social spaces of the inhabitants of San Diego and Getsemaní. The process of gentrification by tourism in Cartagena has increased in recent years. This is due to the number of visitors, implementation of economic incentives and the international visibility of Cartagena through events and international meetings that make the city attractive for national and international investment.
