ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author focuses on her first experience on mentoring a new graduate. Being a mentor of a college student was like being a mother taking care of a new-born baby who demanded a great deal of attention and guidance as he/she grew up. Mentoring is a unique interpersonal relationship between two individuals. Mentoring undergraduates or mentoring undergraduate research has never been the focus or practice in Taiwan. The foremost challenge the author encountered was to think back to her own experience as a mentee at graduate school and as a faculty member. Yet, the next challenge she and other mentors might encounter is to find the suitable or best time for regular weekly meetings with mentees. Mentoring undergraduate research is a very time-consuming process. While some mentors find editing writing style and correcting formatting time-intensive, many mentors find scheduling time to meet with mentees is the major challenge for them.
