ABSTRACT

Regionalism is one of the most famous contemporary concepts in political science. This phenomenon is described as “a process through which geographical regions become significant political and/or economic units, serving as the basis for cooperation and possibly identity” (Heywood 2011: 481). It tends to emulate through out the world. At the same time, human rights—a long-standing concept in the field—appeared to be more than ever intertwined with regionalism. The primary research question posed in this chapter can be stated as such: Does the ASEAN as a regional organization trigger human rights’ improvements within Myanmar? This chapter, as the title implies, also focuses on the issue of human rights, which can be thought of as a series of rights that are universal and natural to all human beings.
