ABSTRACT

My path to a career in urban planning had many bends and did not start professionally till midlife, but I believe began to head that way much earlier. Looking back on it, I see a running tension between a desire to change the world in a big way and a need to fi nd a specifi c role in that process where I could make a concrete contribution, necessarily with much more limited objectives but based on a professional activity in which I would fi nd satisfaction and have some claim to credentials in the effort.
