ABSTRACT

In this book, 16 distinguished spatial planners with an average age of 75 (in February 2016), have unpacked the secrets of how and why they built their ideas over the last fi ve to six decades. As a collection, these autobiographical essays provide an incredibly rich knowledge base which can be used to better understand how planning ideas have evolved and developed in some selected places throughout the world. However, our world is constantly changing, and spatial planning is not a static concept. Today’s planning academics and planning practitioners have to work in a different context than that of the authors of these essays. Thus, the emerging question is: What lessons can be learnt from past experiences to enhance the future of spatial planning? There is no immediate answer to this question. However, through producing an intergenerational dialogue between the older generation of spatial planners and the next generation of spatial planners, a meaningful answer can begin to emerge.
