ABSTRACT

Vice President Joe Biden says that the election was not a choice between Obama and the Almighty; rather, Obama should be compared to the alternative. It is just the symbol of obstruction in Election 2012. The surprises and contradictions of the 2012 campaign roiled Republicans. The fact that the party nominated a former Massachusetts governor hardly squared with its past. The influence of outside groups within the GOP that are more committed to ideological purity than to winning elections has grown. The propensity of millennials to give Barack Obama the vast proportion of their votes in two consecutive elections foreshadows creation of an Obama generation that shapes American politics for decades to come. In the meantime, Obama remains on solid demographic footing, and the Democratic dominance in presidential elections that began in 2008 could continue for some time. One reason for Obama's strong showing among millennials is that they embody the changing demographic trends described in this chapter.
