ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes that the primary emotional effect of neoliberalism in education is fear, and that the promotion of neoliberal academic policies is itself a type of terrorism, namely, academic terrorism. The economic and political dimensions of universities have become a very hot and contested topic of late especially within scholarly organizations affiliated with the humanities. It is not uncommon now to find, for example, standing room audiences at the Modern Language Association (MLA) or American Comparative Literature Association (ACLA) for presentations about the job market or the fate of tenure, while sessions devoted to subjects such as comparative arts. Corporate university system has the ability to promote fear and terror within academe gets a longer lease on life. The liberal arts and critical studies in American higher education are better labeled the neoliberal arts and uncritical studies. The academic terrorism promoted by neoliberalism would most definitely be one of the cases that falls outside the usual sphere of attention.
