ABSTRACT
In this chapter I discuss the applicability of theories of governmentality and moral regulation, taking empirical examples from recent media controversies. Key concepts are the construction of self-governing and rights-bearing subjects, governmentality, government at a distance, government by discussion, civility and decency, racialization of subjects, moral panics, and performativity.
