ABSTRACT
Second, in arguing that social movements begin in spontaneity, I do not mean to understate the prior role of community organizing, training workshops, or acts of rebellion that may have been precursors or signs of things to come. Rosa Parks was an organizer. The Montgomery boycott was well organized. But no one could predict when and how the chain of events might begin or where it would lead or the sudden surge of popular determination.
