ABSTRACT
America thus remains deeply divided over the meaning of events long ago. The difference is the existence of the living legacy of the sixties as a stubborn obstacle to turning back. But what appears as progress from the standard of 1960 seems at best to be nostalgia-filled compromise to many of those growing up in more recent decades. The Long Sixties are not over at fifty.
