ABSTRACT

Tom and I go back a long way, over 50 years. I first met him and Al Haber when a Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) delegation came seeking support at the 1961 National Student Association (NSA) convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul in 1961. Tom’s future wife, Casey, was in our delegation. Paul Potter was there; he became the NSA officer who would be liaison to SNCC. There were right-wingers too, the Young Americans for Freedom and their intellectual founder, William F. Buckley, an old CIA person. One night there was a big encounter between Tom and Buckley, but Tom stayed on the edge of the crowd and wouldn’t debate him.
