ABSTRACT

The teaching and learning of action-research has been a theme at the alternative, community-oriented university the Western Institute for Social Research (WISR) since its inception in 1975. We believe that research should be inclusive by eliciting participation from many of the people involved in the action efforts we study. As both students and educators, we have learned that such participa-tory action-research has great potential for producing imaginative and powerful insights, empowering participants, and bringing about tangible community improvements by contributing to our social-change efforts on behalf of larger ideals such as social justice and the greater realization of human potential.
