ABSTRACT
Beginning in the nineteenth century, the introduction of Western culture and the industrial revolution resulting from advances in technology, interrupted the evolutionary processes of urban development in the Middle East. There was a sharp break in the continuum, and a rejection of the architectural heritage of the past as modernisation became synonymous with Westernisation.
