ABSTRACT

Brunei is believed to be an old established Malay State situated in the Southeast Asian region which had a trading connection with countries in the Asian continent as early as the sixth or seventh century a.d. Traders and missionaries from Arabia, India and China sailed via the country’s port because of its strategic geographic location as well as good security. Archaeological work in Brunei and in neighbouring Sarawak (East Malaysian State) supports such a claim (Broadcasting & Information Department 1985).
