ABSTRACT

Research on infant habituation is of relatively recent origin. Although comprehensive investigations of infant learning, perception, cognition, and social development date back at least to the 1930's, the first studies of habituation in the human infant began to appear in the literature less than 15 years ago. Even as late as 1971 one could conclude only that by 2 or 3 months of age infants could habituate to stimuli from a variety of modalities, and that the habituation procedure might prove useful in assessing the beginnings of other psychological processes (Jeffrey & Cohen, 1971).
