ABSTRACT

Impulse is defined as the applied force multiplied by the time (duration) for which the force is applied. Linear momentum is defined as the object’s mass (kg) multiplied by the object’s linear velocity (m/s). Impulse can be further classified as the change in momentum of an object. This change in momentum is normally brought about by a change in velocity because during human movement the mass of the object stays relatively constant. This change in momentum can therefore be brought about by increasing or decreasing either the force applied or the duration (time) for which the force is applied. In human movement there are many examples of where increasing and decreasing the impulse will result in changes in momentum, for example shot-put, javelin, long jumping, high jumping and reducing the potentially damaging impact force during running.
