ABSTRACT

Sir Isaac Newton (1643–1727), who was an English mathematician, formulated three laws of motion that were termed Newton’s laws. Law 1, the law of inertia, is concerned with how a body stays at rest or moves with uniform motion. Law 2, the law of acceleration, is concerned with a force applied to an object and the resulting change (or not) in the motion or state of the object. Law 3, the law of reaction, is concerned with how when one object exerts a force on another object there will always be a reaction force from the second object acting on the first (in other words forces always come in pairs). Newton’s three laws of motion apply in many examples of human movement and a recognition of these laws is critical for improvement in performance or the prevention of injury.
