ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to shed some light on the cultural identity perception of British Arab youth and in particular the influence of religion on the process of construction and reconstruction of their identities. It also explores the importance of Islam in British Arab youth's opinions. Prior to the Arab Spring, young British Arabs tended to turn to the Internet to negotiate their identity by exploring their cultural roots a shift from traditional institutions of preaching Islam to new sources such as satellite channels. The online sphere attracted Arab youth from all over the world to engage with the Arab Spring day-to-day events, most specifically in the first half of 2011. As online media increasingly make it easier to engage, empirical data collected during the early stages of the Arab Spring show that British Arab youth were motivated to engage with the Arab Spring using online media.
