ABSTRACT

According to Safwat, the Problems and Solutions counsellors' engagement with Islamic boundaries coincides with the expectations of the Problems and Solutions users: The one who enters Israel Online (IOL) is doing so on the basis of the answer being within the boundaries of Islam. It has parts that are social, psychological, educational, but the user wants it Islamic. Online monitoring and analysis was carried out from January 2009 to March 2010. The author logged tendencies and coded the following online material: counselling essays about marital communication; and Problems and Solutions exchanges about pre-marital and marital problems. The case of IOL and Problems and Solutions demonstrates how Islamic traditions, boundaries and identities are constantly negotiated behind the scenes. Rather than echoing critics of Islam Online in deeming Problems and Solutions un-Islamic, the author would argue that the Problems and Solutions counsellors understanding of Islam is an example of what Woodhead and Heelas label religions of humanity.
