ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the issue of investigative training in the context of the evidence based policing paradigm within the UK, USA and Canada. In police training, emphasis on cultural change and ethical standards leads the political agenda since the Neyroud report in 2011 triggered the government to setting up the College of Policing. The investigative field has also seen the rise in the use of simulation-based training such as the well tested 'Hydra' system designed to enhance decision-making skills in a variety of settings. Problems with the standard and consistency of police training in Canada were highlighted as recently as 2014 by the House Standing Committee, which found that police officer skills vary across jurisdictions. Criminal investigation in the UK is undertaken by investigators at all levels of the police service, including uniformed constables and detectives. Police organisations are slowly embedding evidence based policing into their training strategy.
