ABSTRACT

Time series analysis indicated that the district of Coochbehar is gaining importance as a maize-growing area in the Bengal economy, but sustainability' was a prime concern. Incorporation of rabi maize in the cropping system is indeed an economically worthwhile enterprise in the area under study and can well be thought of as a feasible venture for improving the plight of farming folks. Maize can provide the role of a cash crop and can be a big boost for uplifting the socio-economic status of a farm family. However, the momentum, so gained, has to be sustained for better capacity building and improving the overall farm economy. Farmers, in a developing economy, often lack many things. They not only lack in physical resources but also in knowledge, skills and competence. Agricultural production activities encompass efficient management of land, men and materials for improving farming performance, and these factors of production are dynamic in nature.
