ABSTRACT

In some cities, the use density has become so high that even walking—the most-used traffic mode between destinations in dense city centres—has become difficult, causing stress and diminishing the overall quality of experience. This chapter introduces the commented walks which can also be considered a hybrid form of mobile interview and observation. The researcher therefore rereads the texts as well as the observation protocols and photos once more, and compares the texts with the return-to-the-field protocols. Using commented walks, a deeper understanding of the emergence of crowding and its context was achieved for Florence. Florence is one of the main destinations in culturally oriented urban tourism in Europe. The focus on practices and performances in the context of urban tourism also takes account of the fact that the distinction between locals and tourists seems to be increasingly blurred, as both often pursue the same activities.
