ABSTRACT

Warism is the position that war is morally justifiable both in principle and in fact. Some warists go so far as to say war is at times morally required, both for individuals and for their country. Pacifists are a tiny minority. The overwhelmingly dominant attitude is simply taking war for granted as morally acceptable. Warism pervades not only politics but virtually all aspects of culture, including business, education, popular culture, and even religion. Feminism has taught us that dominant attitudes about people are more likely values we choose than innate features of human nature. Warism results in a dominant attitude among many people that keeping the peace means preserving the status quo. Often those with this idea of peace are in privileged positions relative to those against whom they see violence as warranted.
