ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the overlap between two political stances: feminism and nonviolence. It discusses third wave feminism by drawing on the work of feminist groups and individual women to illustrate the wide variety of influence that feminists and feminism have had on nonviolent activism and also the ways in which they have created more justice in the world. The chapter also focuses on Leymah Gbowee’s activism that brought down Charles Taylor, a violent dictator responsible for widespread violence and suffering in Africa. It analyzes the work of Arundhati Roy, who rose to prominence when her book The God of Small Things was published in 1997. The chapter examines the activism of two organizations, Code Pink and Madres de Plaza de Mayo. It presents few examples of nonviolent feminism and hopefully has inspired the reader to continue to look for more examples in their local contexts and around the world.
